Child’s Play – Gardening with Your Children

Gardening with your children can produce some of the greatest memories, laughs and lessons.  Today, my daughter and I dug in and got started by spreading 30 bags of mulch, enhancing a spring bulb flower bed and potting one plant.  Tomorrow we will get our container herb garden done.

Nothing like fresh air, sun and flowers to entertain a 17-month old for 3 hours today!  But she didn’t just play. She had fun helping me carry tools (safe ones only), spread mulch and pack dirt in the flower pot.

Getting your children involved in the outdoors or gardening is such a great thing.  It not only allows them to have fun, but they learn so much about nature, how things grow and are not afraid to get dirty.  Even as young as my daughter is, we still talk about each tool, flower and activity.

And don’t forget about all the fun and time you get to share.  She had fun collecting moss from the sidewalk and storing it in her wheelbarrow. She loves looking at the different colored rocks, and feeling the dirt in her hands made her think, “This is something new.”

And don’t forget how good you will feel.  Flowers, spring air and the sun puts everyone in a good mood.

And after a great afternoon of yard work, she is well into probably what will be a 2 hour nap.  And she would probably tell you, her work is never done!
